MS Windows (all versions)
Below is an outline of my Windows curriculum. You can start your studies with me at any point in it and continue forward as far as you wish; or, you can study outline topics out of order; or, you can elect to study other topics not listed here; or, you can pursue any curriculum we agree upon.
1. Definitions of terms:
Platform, hardware, software, permanent and temporary storage, drive (Hard, CD-ROM, CDR, floppy, Zip, DVD), RAM memory, save, file, program (application, task), Microsoft, operating system (OS), Windows, DOS, cpu, folder/directory, window, Desktop, display, pane, frame, scroll bar, title bar, status bar, menu, bit, byte, drive, open, exit, close, delete, dialog (box), tab, button, text window, active (button or window), Explorer, Exploring.
2. the Windows Desktop:
The Desktop Screen, Icons, Shortcuts, The Task bar, Menus and the START menu; turning off the computer; the Recycle Bin; My Computer; the System Tray; setting the Time on the system clock.
3. Windows Basics:
Basic mouse operations; the Cursor/insertion point vs. the Mouse Pointer; Selecting; deleting; the Recycle Bin vs. permanent deletion; double-click; drag; right-click; "window" and window elements; window display states; "parent" and "child" windows; moving and sizing windows; program windows vs. dialog boxes; the "Find" files or folders dialog; the "Run" command line; the Program menu; the Control Panel; the Help menu.
4. the Keyboard:
The Enter key; the Delete, and Backspace keys; using the Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys; the cursor keypad (the cursor/arrow keys; the Home and End keys; the Insert; Page Up and Page Down keys; Shift vs. Caps Lock; the Tab key; the Esc key; the Function keys; keyboard equivalents to using the mouse; the Windows key; the numeric keypad and Num Lock; Print Screen, Pause/Break; Scroll Lock.
5. to run (load, open) an existing Program:
using the Program menu, a Desktop shortcut, the Task bar (when already open), via the main executable file in Windows Exploring
6. to Install a new Program in Windows:
preparation: disabling Virus protection and closing all open background utilities; via the CD-AutoRun mode, the Control Panel, or the Run menu
7. Right-Clicking with the mouse:
Creating, renaming, and deleting new folders and Desktop Shortcuts; the Display and System properties dialogs; editing the display background and screen savers; editing the Taskbar; the Start-menu shortcut to Windows' Exploring; display drive capacities in Exploring; toolbars and the "Quick Launch" toolbar.
8. Drives and their "Architecture":
Permanent vs. temporary storage; memory vs. drives (Hard, CD-ROM, CDR, floppy, Zip, DVD), directories and folders.
9. Windows "Exploring" and File Management:
How to open and configure Exploring; the directory tree and file list panes; the directory tree and nested folder paradigm; creating new folders and subfolders; file naming conventions; extension names and file "types"; sorting files on any attribute; finding, renaming, and deleting files and folders; multiple file selection; copying and moving files or folders; displaying Exploring as the Windows 3.x File Manager.
10. Saving files in a program to a specific drive/folder:
saving Word or Excel files using the Save AS dialog box, the "Save In:" text window, and setting the correct "path"
11. the Windows Clipboard:
"Cut" and "Paste": copying or moving selections within a file or to a new file or program.
12. When a program becomes unresponsive or "hangs up":

Screen colors, type faces, icon size, spacing and labels; font point sizes, changing display adapter and monitor settings; the display background and screensavers.

Add/Remove programs; Add New Hardware; Mouse; Modems; Printers; System; Network; Fonts; Sounds; Internet Options; Passwords.

how to enter and use the Startup menu in Windows 95, 98, and 2000;
22. the Windows Safe Mode and the DOS mode; :
the Clean and Safe modes; the DOS mode and DOS windows.
23. Changing file-type Associations:
Which program opens (is associated with) which file-type; assigning and changing file-type associations.
24. CMOS Setup:
the system BIOS and the CMOS setup
25. Drivers, IRQs; Ports and Conflicts; configuring peripheral devices.
Drivers; Serial and Parallel ports; Com Ports; LPT ports; IRQs; reconciling conflicts; Device Manager; configuring modems, scanners, digital cameras, and other peripheral devices.
26. DOS
using the DOS operating system; DOS commands; DOS drivers and their importance; renaming multiple files simultaneously.
27. the System files; the System editor:
the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files; the System files and Sysedit.
28. the Registry files; the Registry editor:
MSCONFIG.SYS; MSDOS.SYS; the system Registry files and Regedit.
