My Philosophy
|
I teach understanding, not just the transmission of facts. My instruction is structured in such a way that, hopefully, as it's presented, you can see and feel each new idea's connection and relationship to a larger, developing body of knowledge. This careful structuring of presented information facilitates and completes your understanding.
I teach computers to help destroy a religion of computers. So many adults educated before the computer age and still computer illiterate feel disenfranchised from a full participation in modern life. Many of my students are confused, frustrated, and don’t understand most of what appears in computer manuals or on their computer screens. This confusion and frustration is often my experience also, even after 40 years of trying to understand computers. To those students I say, "It’s not your fault."; "Don’t get depressed. Get angry!"; and "Take hope." Most of what appears on computer screens and in books about computers is so confusing, misleading, obscure, impossible to find, or just simply incorrect, that I often feel the authors must have been sadistically motivated and/or have no concept of what’s involved in communicating with other human beings.
I do know what’s involved in communication. For almost 40 years I’ve studied it, failed at it, picked myself up, dusted myself off, and went at it again. I’ve been a teacher of mathematics and computers on the faculties of half a dozen universities around the country. I've been counseled and a counselor, and an ardent spiritual seeker as well. And I’ve seen that in order to truly understand a subject, students need a teacher who has and provides:
I teach for you, not for me. I am not interested in showing you how clever I am, nor in flapping my gums to hear myself talk. Rather, I want to help you to feel comfortable with exposing to yourself what you don't understand. When you are clear about what you do and do not know, and can relax into that place, your IQ will almost certainly go up, and true learning finally has a chance to occur. You need bring nothing to my classes except an openness to change and to learn.
Most computer instructors either know a lot, but don't have a clue as to how to communicate it, or they're good communicators, but don't know their material. I, however, am a rarity in this profession in that I A) have been in this business 40 years (starting with mainframes in 1962 in Boston)
B) am a Master at communicating what I know (literally, I have a Master's Degree with HONORS IN TEACHING from Harvard University), and have studied the art of communication for decades.
C) know how difficult it is to understand computer stuff: even after 40 years I still tear my hair out trying to understand so-called computer "instructions".
D) DO know how to organize and present material so as to make it clear and memorable for you.
When you study with me you have a unique opportunity to receive a clear and memorable education from someone who has truly mastered the art - and you learn twice as fast from me as from other teachers.
