MS Excel (all versions)

 

Below is an outline of my MS Excel curriculum.   You can start your studies with me at any point in it and continue forward as far as you wish; or, you can study outline topics out of order; or, you can elect to study other topics not listed here; or, you can pursue any curriculum we agree upon.

 

 

  1.    Definitions of terms:

File, workbook, Book1, spreadsheet, worksheet, sheet, cell, program, window, mouse pointer, cursor/insertion point, select; double-click, right-click, drag; Active cell; block; range; parent window, child window, dialog box, button, text window, drop-down menu, maximize, minimize, restore, open, close, save, delete.

  2.    Elements of the EXCEL Program window:

Title, Menu, and Status bars; Standard and Formatting Tool bars; the Maximize, Restore, Minimize, and Close buttons; Headers (column & row); the Formula Bar; the Name Box; the Scroll bars; renamable Sheet Tabs; the fill handle; the split box; "Office Assistant".

  3.    Excel Basics:

Full screen view; Zooming; the Mouse Pointer vs. the Active cell; the Tools/Options dialog; Excel Help; the "Office Assistant"; window display states; "parent" and "child" windows; moving and sizing windows. 

  4.    moving the Active cell with the Keyboard:

the Cursor, Home, and End keys; using the Ctrl and cursor keys together; Page Up & Page Down, F5; keyboard equivalents to the mouse.

  5.    Selecting:

Selecting with mouse, the Namebox; selecting a block or range; selecting using the Shift key with the mouse or keyboard; selecting an entire row/column; entire data area; entire spreadsheet; selecting nonadjacent blocks, the extended selection mode.

  6.    File management:

to Save, Open, Close, and Delete files; Save vs. Save AS; to have more than one file open at the same time.

  7.    the Undo and Redo commands:

with the Mouse, Toolbar, and/or the Clipboard.

10.    Deleting and Inserting columns or rows:

11.    Hiding, unhiding, and Sizing columns or rows

12.    Formatting cells:

formatting vs. contents; cell borders and fills; currency; wrapping text in a cell; clearing formatting vs. contents; over-riding data types; a real Tab in a cell; superscripts and subscripts.

13.    Worksheets: to Delete, Add, Copy or Move:

14.    Splitting the Worksheet window into separate panes:

an exercise using the vertical and horizontal split boxes.

15.    Series:

Linear vs. Growth; AutoFill vs. the Edit/Fill/Series command sequence; right-dragging the auto-fill handle; default and manual "seed" values.

18.    Printing; Print Preview and Page Setup:

Portrait or Landscape orientation; Scaling the print area up or down; Margins; Headers and Footers; removing all sheet grid lines from either the display or the printed output; printing row and column headers; to change the print order ("down, then over" vs. "over, then down") of a multiple-page job; to specify rows/columns to repeat at the top/left; to print out parts of the same worksheet on different pages; to print out parts of different worksheets on the same page.

19.    Functions:

Exercises using the SUM; INT, ROUND, IF, COUNTIF, SUMIF, DATE, and TIME functions.

20.    Formulas:

Exercises arithmetically referencing blocks, columns or rows (i.e., making a column be the sum, difference, product, or quotient of the respective cells of two or more other columns), absolute vs. relative cell-referencing; concatenating text strings; subtotals.

21.    Linking and referencing cells in other sheets or files:

22.    Paste Special:

to add/subtract a specified number to/from an entire block of data; to multiply or divide an entire block of data by a specified number; to "transpose" rows into columns or vice-versa; to superimpose formatting that varies within a block on another block of the same size.

25.    Charts and Graphs:

Exercises creating and formatting Pie, Bar, Column, Line, Scatter, Stock, and/or other desired chart types.

26.    Templates:

Creating a new workbook based on a previously created template; to base a particular sheet in a workbook on a particular template sheet; editing templates; autotemplates.

27.    Toolbars:

moving and customizing.

28.    Formulas and Functions defined on Blocks; 3-D functions.

29.    Pivot tables:

arithmetic operations and functions defined on matrices.
